Mary Goldman Gallery is pleased to announce You're Too Old to Understand, an exhibition of new watercolors by David Rathman, on view from September 8, 2007 through October 13, 2007.  An opening reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, September 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

In a departure from his recent paintings depicting sports themes, Rathman turns his attention to garage bands and the fantasy of escape they impart on suburban life and adolescence.  From mosh pits to abandoned basketball courts and junkyard automobiles, he moves gracefully from the charged adrenaline of a rock fan's stage dive to the eerie solitude of a lone vintage Mustang.  The angst and fleeting immortality of teenage years is further reiterated in appropriated text quoting song lyrics. The images, read together, capture the beautiful hazy transcendence of a live show. One senses an isolated excitement of restless youth, when the world seemed claustrophobically small, and the guitar became a vehicle for conquering monotony.  Long live rock and roll!

David Rathman is a Minneapolis based artist whose exhibitions include New Museum of Contemporary Art, NY, Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, NY, and The Walker Art Center, MN, Clementine Gallery, NY, and Weinstein Gallery, MN. This is Rathman's second solo exhibition with the gallery.
